Malcolm at 5 weeks.

He loves baths.  At least as much as a 5 week old can love a bath.  In other words, he sits in it scowling but it calms him down and keeps him awake in the evening.

He has a serious case of early onset male pattern baldness.  The full top of his head has lost his hair, but the sides and back are long and luscious.  Since his hair is fine and straight after we wash it, the side and back stick straight up giving him the look of a triceratops crest.  It is so ugly it's cute.

He's about 14 pounds.

Our mornings when it is just the two of us, we spend a lot of time in the position of the selfie taken above.  Him snuggled, me reading.  Its glorious.

Sleeping is all over the place.  I go to bed around 8pm, and Shawn tries to keep him up until 10pm.  Most nights he gets up to eat around 12:30 or 1am to eat and is up for about 45 minutes.  On a bad night, he is up again at 2:30am and is ready to play until around 5 or 5:30am.  That's unfortunate because the older kids are up at 6am. On a good night, he sleeps until 4:30am, and is ready to play until the older kids get up.  There's not a lot of sleep to be had, but all things considered, I think it could be much, much worse.

Validation from my kids

(Picture from a recent evening power outage)

Conversation #1:
Scarlett, looking at our wedding photo: Is that you and daddy?
Me: Yes.
Scarlett: You look like Elsa.  That's super beautiful.

Conversation #2, a few days later:
Nevin: That's great, mom!
Me, with a tiny bit of sarcasm: Thanks, Nevin.
Nevin: You don't think you are great, but you are.

I know self worth must come from the inside, but sometimes I need praise.  And hearing it from my children is just validating and totally heartbreaking.
